Nuclear power is a significant producer of the world’s electricity, generating approximately 16% of global electricity supply. The majority of nuclear power installations in the world occurred in 1970s and 1980s. In 2009, 15% of the world's electricity came from nuclear power. Also, more than 150 naval vessels using nuclear propulsion have been built.

Nuclear power is energy produced from controlled (i.e., non-explosive) nuclear reactions. Commercial plants currently use nuclear fission reactions to generate electricity. Electric utility reactors heat water to produce steam, which is then used to generate electricity. Nuclear power is the fourth-largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydro and renewable sources of electricity.
